Since the major works began in March this year, demolition has been completed and two of the Oval’s four light towers have been dismantled and re-erected with upgraded lighting. Work on the Southern Stand, due for completion in October 2013, is well underway with seating tiers already being installed, and the first elements of the steel superstructure put in place. Its completion in time for next summer’s Ashes Test will take the Oval’s capacity to 35,000.
On the Eastern Stand with a capacity of 18,500, the two level basement structures are well advanced and crews remain on schedule to complete the stand in time to host AFL football from March 2014.
The construction program has been planned around the cricket season. Cricket will continue unimpeded over this and next summer. There will be no noisy works going on to break a batsman’s concentration. Almost 400 people are working on site currently. The workforce will peak next year at over 900 people.
